Mango tree group limited had been licensed by the Uganda Investment Authority to build a ship, a port and shipyard at Bugiri-Bukasa in Katabi, Wakiso district.
The company had built a dredger to clear the silt around the lake which the community and local leaders said was being used in illegal sand mining in the lake.
And responding to these queries last year, the parliamentary committee on Natural resources demanded that the company be investigated for illegal sand mining.
However, after a lot of back and forth, the State minister for trade and industry Micheal Werikhe on Wednesday gave Mango Tree Group the green light to dredge the lake.
Werikhe says the government is planning to procure a ship to transport both cargo and passengers to Kenya and Tanzania but the lake is heavily silted and this will affect the docking.
The company says that due to the unresolved disputes regarding the guidelines, the dredger has been grounded for nearly two years and this has caused them a loss of over 29 Billion shillings.
