Zanzibar — Outgoing Chinese Consular General in Zanzibar, Xie Yunliang, has promised that all projects being supported by his country would be completed in the near future.
He said this when bidding farewell to President Ali Mohamed Shein and Second Vice-President Seif Ali Iddi. The big projects supported by China include the ongoing expansion of the Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (AAKIA) with a component of passenger terminal II, and the construction of the Abdalla-Mzee Hospital in Pemba Island.
Other projects are the construction of the Mao Tse Tung Stadium and a modern seaport at Maruhubi-Mpiga Duri area, north of Stone Town.
The Consular General said that he was happy working in Zanzibar for the past two years, praising Zanzibaris for fighting to over the economic challenges. “My end of service here does not mean the end of Chinese support to Zanzibar.
I am certain all projects supported by my country will be completed,” he said. Dr Shein and Ambassador Iddi thanked China for continued support to Zanzibar in its development programmes.
The China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) has been awarded the work to build a $230 million (loan from China-Exim Bank) new port in 36 months after the ground work starts later this year.
According to the plan, the new port will have a 300-metre docking space and 65-metre land craft and modern handling equipment with capability to handle 200,000 containers and 250,000 tons of loose cargo.
