China has denied engaging in any trade negotiations with the United States, contradicting statements made by US President Donald Trump on Friday.

In a statement on WeChat, the Chinese embassy in Washington asserted that there have been no talks or negotiations regarding tariffs between the two nations, let alone any agreements.

The Chinese foreign ministry described US claims of an ongoing tariff dialogue as “misleading.” The statement further insisted that if the US genuinely wants to resolve the issue through dialogue, it must first rectify its mistakes, cease threats and pressure, and completely remove all unilateral tariff measures against China.

President Trump, in an interview with Time Magazine published on Friday, claimed that talks aimed at reaching an agreement were underway and suggested a resolution could be reached in the coming weeks.

He also mentioned having had a phone conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping, although he did not specify when it occurred or discuss its content. “He called. And I don’t view that as a sign of weakness on his part,” stated the US President.

Previously, on Thursday, China’s Ministry of Commerce also denied engaging in economic or trade negotiations with Washington.

The US President has imposed tariffs of 145% on certain Chinese imports, while in retaliation, Beijing has imposed tariffs of 125% on US goods.
