New Orleans, La. – On Tuesday, May 28, Lt. Gen. Scott Spellmon, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers commanding general and 55th Chief of Engineers, signed the St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana Chief of Engineers’ Report for transmission to Congress.
The project calls for a mix of structural and non-structural methods to reduce the flood risk to more than 26 thousand structures. The final report proposes construction of an 18.5-mile-long levee system in Slidell as well as raising and floodproofing 6,410 structures across the Parish.
The St. Tammany Parish study was authorized by the Water Infrastructure Improvements Act for the Nation Act (WINN Act) of 2016 and fully funded by Congress in the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018. USACE and its non-federal sponsor, the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority, initiated the study in early 2020.
To begin construction on the St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana project, Congressional authorization and appropriation is needed.
