A marine construction company in northern Michigan has been awarded more than half a million dollars to dredge in the River Rouge.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District awarded Ryba Marine Construction Company in Cheboygan $736,000 to dredge the River Rouge in southwest Detroit on Wednesday.
According to the Corps, Ryba Marine will remove approximately 66,500 cubic yards of shoal materiel from Dix Road to the I-75 Highway.
Officials said material from the project will be placed at the Pointed Mouille Confined Disposal Facility at the mouth of the Huron River in western Lake Erie.
“This contract to dredge the federal channel in the River Rouge is important to keeping this navigation project open for movement of cargo critical to local and national industry,” said Dave Wright, chief of operations, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District.
Cargo coming into the River Rouge includes iron ore, petroleum products, coal, slag, cement, limestone, lignite, fuel oil, coke, salt, sand and gravel.
The dredging in the River Rouge navigation channel is separate from the Lower Rogue River Old Channel clean-up project and is scheduled to begin in late April 2019.
It is expected to be complete by early June 2019.
