Falmouth Marine & Environmental Services Department this week began a dredging project that will improve the flow of channels and help with flushing of ponds.
On Tuesday, February 23, an excavator was dredging the Salt Pond channel, Mark Kasprzyk, town conservation land manager and marine and environmental services technician, said.
The two-week project will involve dredging the Fresh River channel on Surf Drive; the ocean and inland sides of Trunk River on Oyster Pond Road; Falmouth Inner Harbor; and the ocean and inland sides of Little Pond channel on Menauhant Road, he said.
This is the second year the town has rented an excavator with extra-long reach from Plymouth County.
“We had pretty amazing results last year,” Mr. Kasprzyk said. “You can get much farther out into the channels and remove a greater amount of sand.”
The dredged material will be used to help mitigate erosion at Menauhant Beach and Surf Drive.
This is a cooperative effort between the Department of Public Works and the harbormaster’s office.
