Central Dredging Association – CEDA: The Big 5 in African Dredging

Posted on February 9, 2026

In the coming months, we will be introducing the various non-paper sessions included in the Dredging Days 2026 programme. This time, the session focussing on Africa.

It’s a Zoo out there – let’s take a closer look!

Africa is famous for its breathtaking wildlife and incredible biodiversity. From the sweeping savannas to dense rainforests, vast deserts, and sparkling wetlands, each ecosystem is home to unique and fascinating creatures.
At the same time, Africa is a hub of dredging activity. Dredging is essential for maintaining ports, waterways, hydroelectric dams, and supporting irrigation systems. Large-scale capital dredging projects also involve creating new ports, deepening existing ones and reclaiming land from the sea. In many cases, dredging is closely tied to the extraction of Africa’s rich natural resources, including minerals, metals, and sand.

To explore this further, we’ll focus on the famous African Big Five by organizing interactive sessions next to their enclosures, hosted by specialists. These sessions will address specific aspects of dredging in relation to the unique characteristics of each of these animals. Just one example: the “Elephant” session will focus on long-term planning.
