Carver Cos., the firm that owns the Port of Coeymans, has won what is expected to be a lucrative contract to provide rocks for the foundations of offshore wind farms being built off the coast of Long Island.
Terms of the deal with a Houston company called Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Corp. were not disclosed. Great Lakes Dredge & Dock says it is the largest dredging company in the United States.
Carver Cos. own sand and gravel and rock quarries in upstate New York and one in Canada. The company is based in Coeymans, where the port is located on the Hudson River.
The rocks used on foundations of large offshore wind turbines is designed to prevent erosion and keep the wind turbines in place. Great Lakes Dredge said the rock will be quarried in New York and then put on a boat called the Acadia that will bring the rock to the offshore wind farms starting in 2025.
The two offshore wind farms are the Empire Wind 1 and the Empire Wind 2 off Long Island being built by Equinor, the Norwegian energy company, and BP, formerly known as British Petroleum.
Reached Monday, Carver Cos. did not immediately have a comment on the contract. The company already has an agreement to host wind turbine parts manufacturing at the Port of Coeymans.
“This is a significant milestone for Great Lakes, our clients, Equinor, and BP, as well as Carver,” Eleni Beyko, Great Lakes’ senior vice president of offshore wind said in a statement. “We have worked closely with Equinor and BP to develop this rock supply chain for the Empire Wind projects to deliver local content from the state of New York. With safety and quality as our top priorities, we will be supporting the local communities by creating local jobs and stimulating economic activity in the state of New York.”
