CAROLINA BEACH, NC — Carolina Beach Town Council met for a budget workshop meeting Tuesday before the town’s final budget proposal is presented next month.
During the meeting, council voted unanimously to support a state bill that would hold PFAS polluters financially responsible for filtering the forever chemical out of public water supplies.
That bill passed the House and is currently in the Senate.
Council also voted to provide support for a federal grant request that would fund a project to restore the shoreline of Carolina Beach State Park, which has been eroded by boat wakes and storms.
Councilwoman Deb LeCompte, who introduced the item to council, says the park is a vital resource for the island and must be protected.
“It’s not just an economic value to the town, it’s also recreational value, it provides wildlife habitat, it’s 750 acres of forestry, and we need to everything we can to save it,” she said.
During the meeting, council members also discussed the tax rate, which they plan to keep revenue neutral. That means residents will have a lower tax rate, but because of a revaluation, will pay about the same.
