The Carolina Beach Town Council wants to solicit bids on its lake dredging project.
At its workshop Tuesday night, council decided to solicit bids in order to determine how much completing the project would cost. Leaders in Carolina Beach wanted to dredge the lake to avoid potential flooding.
Another issue is where to dump the dredging materials and Mayor Pro-Tem Steve Bridges said one option could be on town-owned property along River Road. Bridges said council isn’t sure how much that property will hold.
The outgoing town council voted in December 2017 to terminate a contract with Civil Works Construction after work stopped in August 2017.
In December, the town manager said about $1 million had been spent on the project before the contract was terminated.
The town lost its right to dump material at the Military Ocean Terminal at Sunny Point after a dispute over where the material was dumped and environmental concerns.
According to town documents, council looked at four options for the project on Tuesday.
The first would be to leave the project as is and not resume work. The second option would be to remove the soil from the lake and create a new island within the lake. The third option includes removing the soil to a landfill, and the final option involves a remedial action plan.
