Hello, my name is Agata, I am a Sales Manager in Poland. Over the past eight years with Maersk, I’ve been on an amazing journey filled with challenges, growth, and self-discovery.
The dynamic nature of the logistics industry
My career in logistics began in 2010 with roles at DHL and TNT, where I found myself feeling overwhelmed, but at the same time excited by the fast pace, never-ending to-do lists and a beauty of international trade. After half of the decade, to discover my strengths and potential, I have taken an opportunity to prove myself in a slower work environment, working for a production company. However, after 10 months, I realised that I craved the logistics industry’s fast pace and dynamic nature, as it`s much closer to my personal preferences. In 2016, I returned to logistics by joining Damco, a Maersk brand, for my dream role as a sales manager, leading the team of nine, including four women and five men, spread across Poland.
Three years later, I transitioned to a role in the Maersk brand. This was very exciting for me because, growing up as a seafarer’s daughter, I knew of Maersk’s reputation for excellence and hands-on competence. As a Global Client Manager at Maersk, I thrived despite the challenging start due to Maersk’s complexity and steep learning curve. This role also exposed me to international customers, pushing me out of my comfort zone and accelerating my professional development.
Growth and development at Maersk
My desire to lead a team again led me to apply for a role as the leader of the newly formed Direct Transport Sales team. Now, a year into this role, I manage a team of 11 people, including five women.
Gender diversity is important to me. As the only female reporting to a female manager within my team, I aspire to see more women in leadership roles around me and I am committed to fostering this change. My manager’s energy and support has been invaluable, enabling us to overcome obstacles, so that we can excel as our jobs.
I am also responsible for the internal and external commercial events in Poland, for example, for the first time this year, 10 female colleagues and I participated in Women Forum in Logistics in Warsaw. I have also been a host at other commercial events, although I felt really out of my comfort zone hosting, it was a great learning experience, and I was excited to share what we are doing at Maersk with others in the logistics industry.
Maersk’s approach to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)
I really appreciate Maersk’s commitment to DEI. I am a part of the local MIX group (Maersk Inclusion of Excellence), an employee resource network where we promote DEI awareness and help build an inclusive culture. Being part of the cultural and religion team allows me to help others celebrate diverse international holidays, such as Ramadan and Diwali. We also participate in Pride events every year in Poland. Maersk’s efforts in these areas enrich our work environment, promoting a global mindset and cultural awareness that I have not experienced elsewhere.
Support and flexibility at Maersk
Maersk’s support during personal challenges has been amazing. When my mother was battling cancer, there was no issue adjusting my work schedule to prioritise her care. This respect for work-life balance, and the flexibility and support are aspects of Maersk’s culture I deeply value.
Before the pandemic, having moved to Warsaw for the role in Damco, I was in in the office nearly every day. During COVID-19, remote working became the norm, and I moved back to my hometown where I am still based today. I now frequently travel to visit my team and customers, sometimes visiting our Warsaw and Gdynia office. This flexibility, supported by Maersk’s understanding of personal needs, has been instrumental in maintaining productivity and my well-being.
What makes Maersk special
Maersk’s international environment offers unparalleled networking opportunities and career mobility. Unlike other companies where roles are rigid, Maersk allows for flexibility in how I want to advance my career, whether in terms of location or role. The encouragement we receive from senior management and the appreciation they show for us regularly create a culture of positivity and growth. Maersk is always moving forwards, bringing fresh perspectives and new challenges that fuel my brain and constantly keeps me engaged.
Continuing my incredible journey
I am grateful for the opportunities and support Maersk has provided me. The dynamic environment, cultural inclusivity, and career development possibilities make Maersk a special place to work. I look forward to many more years of growth and contribution within this incredible company.
