Cape San Blas, Fl. Beach Restoration Project Finally Underway after Delays

Posted on April 3, 2026

A major beach restoration project is now underway at Cape San Blas, with crews beginning work this week to rebuild the shoreline.

A dredge arrived Tuesday and has started pumping sand back onto the beach, marking the first renourishment effort in the area since 2019. In addition to restoring sand, the project includes the installation of eight breakwater structures designed to reduce wave energy and slow erosion. For local residents, the effort has been long anticipated. While erosion cannot be stopped entirely, the added breakwaters are expected to help manage its impact by absorbing wave action and protecting the shoreline.

On Wednesday, onlookers gathered to watch the operation in progress as sand flowed through dredge pipelines and bulldozers shaped the expanding beach. Many residents see the project as an important investment in the area’s future, particularly for tourism. They note that a wider, healthier beach will help attract visitors and support the local economy, especially during peak travel seasons.

The $24 million project was made possible through a combination of grants and state funding, with State Representative Jason Shoaf playing a key role in securing critical financial support. Construction is expected to take between 60 and 80 days, ultimately restoring more than a mile of beachfront.
