Canaveral Harbor Sand Bypass Project Update, with dredging by Great Lakes Dredge & Dock

Posted on March 31, 2025

27 March 2025

The current work area is located at the northern end of Segment 2 between approximately N 2nd Street and N 1st Street. Work along Segment 1 was completed on 21-March-2025.

Beach tilling will be conducted along the completed Segment 1 shoreline beginning on 31-March-2025 and will be conducted in the evenings when the beach is mostly unpopulated. Tilling is expected to be conducted from the jetty to north of the pier between 31-March to 2-April and from south of the pier to Shepard Park beginning on 2-April. Tilling is required by the project’s permits to “loosen up” the sand after the dredged fill placement for marine turtle nesting this summer.

Please see the below interactive map and the project maps page for details and the current construction schedule.

Project Highlights

  • The Canaveral Harbor Federal Sand Bypass Project, Phase VI, will dredge 1,500,000 cubic yards of sand from the shoreline north of Port Canaveral and place the sand along two beach areas south of the inlet:   3.3 miles along the City of Cape Canaveral & north Cocoa Beach, and 3.7 miles along south Cocoa Beach.
  • The 2024/25 project will move a much larger volume of sand – and place it further alongshore – than any of the previous five bypass project
  • Project construction is allowed from December 2024 through April 2025. The current schedule is for placement along Segment 1 (northern reach) from late January 2025 to mid-March and placement along Segment 2 (southern reach) from mid-March to early April 2025. Work not constructed during that period will be completed from November 2025 through April 2026.
  • The project transfers sand from north to south across the inlet that has been interrupted by the federal inlet jetties and ship channel.
  • This is the sixth sand bypass project since its inception in 1995.  The sand placement will initially widen the beach by about 100 feet, after which the sand will drift southward, maintaining Brevard’s beaches at their historical dimensions.
  • Project construction is managed and 100% funded by the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers.  Additional design, permitting & monitoring is provided and funded by the Canaveral Port Authority (Project Sponsor), Brevard County (co-Sponsor), and Florida Dept. of Environmental Protection – with logistical support by the US Space Force SL Delta 45.
  • While construction moves along the beach, there will be temporary, local beach access closures for 2 or 3 days.  See the project website for updated schedule information.
