You’re seeing work to dredge Windsor Woods Canal and improve the infrastructure for handling stormwater in flood-prone areas.
The $2 million project to dredge the nearly one-mile canal began in January and should wrap up in June or July, according to public works engineer Mike Mundy.
About 10,900 cubic yards of dredge material will be removed in order to clear growth, stabilize the banks and improve drainage flow.
The contractor is using the site on Old Forge Road – the western end of the Windsor Woods Canal, near Mount Trashmore – as a staging area for dredging equipment.
The canal begins near Presidential Boulevard, flows west under South Plaza Trail, before emptying into Lake Windsor. At the west end of the lake is the outlet for water to drain into Thalia Creek and ultimately the Lynnhaven River.
“Lake Windsor is tidal, so that can compound the problem of draining the canals during heavy rain storms,” said Mundy.
Four additional dredging projects in the area will be complete by June 2019.
