Canada’s offshore wind ‘superpower’ ramp as Trump tanks US market

Posted on June 9, 2025

Nova Scotia is pushing a dramatic, eightfold increase of its offshore wind goals to 40GW in response to Prime Minister Mark Carney’s aim to transform Canada into an “energy superpower”, local media reported yesterday.

The US’ northern neighbour is pushing offshore wind in its Atlantic provinces as a significant source of power generation, including setting five new areas for development earlier this year.

Sector development in Nova Scotia is particularly promising due to strong winds averaging 10-12 metres per second and mostly shallow seabed that allows for fixed bottom development well out of eyeshot, eliminating viewshed concerns.
