Canada’s first offshore wind project has taken a major step toward becoming a reality with the issuing of a key permit.
Oceanic Wind Energy and Coast Tsimshian Enterprises are working together to develop a 600 to 700MW farm in the Hecate Strait, located just west of Stephens Island on the country’s west coast.
The partners have now been granted an investigative use permit to explore the feasability of such a project.
Mike O’Connor, president of Oceanic Wind, said: “This agreement brings Oceanic and Coast Tsimshian a major step closer to realising Canada’s first offshore wind farm.”
The Hecate Strait is reportedly home to one of the world’s most powerful and consistent wind resources, with high-speed wind conditions, low shear and turbidity and a winter capacity factor of more than 65pc providing an “unparalleled” opportunity to generate clean, reliable energy for the British Columbian region.
Ryan Leighton, director at Coast Tsimshian Enterprises, said: “We look forward to working closely with Oceanic to develop this transformative project.
“This first phase will help power the region’s growth while creating long-term economic and environmental benefits.”
In addition to supporting regional development, the project will contribute significantly to Canada’s greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction goals.
