The Cajun Navy was out on the water in St. Martin Parish today trying to expose what they believe played a large role in recent historic flooding.
Doug Bienvenu is one of the original members of the Cajun Navy and says they’re looking to go beyond the normal search rescue efforts.
“Now, we’re here to help solve the problem and try to get federal aid and let the public know what’s going on so they can understand why we’re having all this flooding.”
St. Martin Parish President Guy Cormier believes a partnership with the Cajun Navy can be beneficial for everyone.
“These guys know the area, just as good as we do maybe better and we want to be able to see if we can use their resources in moving forward and how we can actually start looking towards the future and how we can better clean up our parish,” Cormier told News 10.
The parish president says the local hunters and fishermen of the navy could possibly assist in securing federal funding for recovery.
“To be able to do that you’ve got to be able to tell them (the Federal government) where the problems are and we’re going to ask these guys for their assistance moving forward and hopefully get some help from them and the federal and state government,” Cormier added.
The Cajun Navy will meet this Wednesday in St. Martinville with government officials to try and get money to fund the Bayou Teche dredging project.
