Cagayan River Dredging Imminent, Says Piñol

Posted on October 31, 2016

Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol will recommend to President Duterte the immediate dredging of the Cagayan River here.

Based on what he saw during their aerial assessment to determine the extent of Lawin’s damages, Piñol said should there be another typhoon that will hit region 2, lives will really be at risk.

He said dredging should now be done because the river is already silted.

“Dredging could be the most possible solution to solve the problem on perennial floods and bank erosions in many communities along or near the Cagayan River,” the Secretary said.

He recommended for the need of a separate authority to manage the river where he cited Cagayan River Management Authority for that matter.

“We are thankful that we have a President who had high regard to agriculture,” the secretary said.
