Burst Pipe on Dredge Barge Injures 3

Posted on September 5, 2018

Authorities say a burst pipe on a dredge barge off New Jersey injured three people, but the injuries are reported to be minor.

The Coast Guard says preliminary information indicates that the suction pipe used to remove material from the bottom burst at about 2:40 p.m. Monday on the barge off Seaside Heights.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Shannon Kearney says the dredging crew reported that they would take the crew members for treatment of their injuries. The Coast Guard will investigate.

The Asbury Park Press reports that Cranford-based Weeks Marine has been working for months on a massive beach replenishment project to expand beaches from the Manasquan to Barnegat inlets.

Work has been ongoing in Ortley Beach and Seaside Park, with sand pumped onshore from offshore dredges.
