Residents of Burnt Store Isles appear to agree that areas of the rim canal in the community need dredging, but the matter of paying for the project continues to ignite debate.
The BSI Canal Advisory Committee decided last year to proceed with a dredging project that could ultimately cost upwards of $700,000. To finance the one-year undertaking, the Canal Advisory Committee proposed assessing waterfront property owners a $120 annual fee each of the next six years.
Not all residents are on board with that plan, and a Concerned Citizens Committee attended Tuesday’s Canal Advisory Committee meeting at the Charlotte Harbor Event and Conference Center to offer an alternative to the assessment fee.
