Brooksville’s dredging plan could ease tide troubles for local fishermen at Betsy’s Cove

Posted on February 18, 2025

BROOKSVILLE, Maine (WGME) — A plan to dredge a small Midcoast town’s shoreline could make the local fishermen’s lives much easier, as they currently have to work around the tide schedule at the only public landing.

Brooksville officials have been hoping to dredge about 250 feet out from the shore of Betsy’s Cove, since the landing is only accessible during high tide.

However, the town declined to split the cost of a $600,000 study with the Army Corps of Engineers.

“There are a number of inhabited islands out in Penobscot Bay, and we can’t put a boat in the water to go save somebody,” Mark Shaughnessy, the chairman of the Harbor Committee for Brooksville, said.
