Brazil’s government has filed a request for consultations at the World Trade Organization over the tariffs imposed by the US on goods from that country, it said in a statement on Wednesday from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Brazil voiced opposition to the tariff measures recently enacted by the US under two executive orders signed by President Donald Trump on April 2 and July 30, which allow tariffs of up to 50% on a wide range of US imports from Brazil.
Brazil says by imposing these measures, the US flagrantly violates its core commitments to the WTO, such as the most-favored-nation principle and the tariff ceilings negotiated within the organization.
The same day, President Lula da Silva said that he has no intention of negotiating with President Donald Trump over the new tariffs. Instead, he said he would raise the issue with leaders of BRICS member countries, as several of them are also facing similar US tariffs.
Earlier President Lula has repeatedly criticized the US for its unilateral imposition of tariffs but has affirmed that Brazil is not about to announce reciprocal tariffs.
