Essential dredging work at the country’s largest port, Santos, is in danger after the Special Ports Ministry, or SEP, canceled a contract with local dredging outfit EEL, necessitating the institution of draft restrictions in the harbor.
“We have so many top-class, farcical soap operas going on in Brazil these days, and this one in Santos is right up there with the best of them,” a Santos ship agent told JOC.com.
Several terminals at Santos, which handled 3.78 million 20-foot-equivalent units in 2015, are suffering serious silting problems, which could make rivals such as Paranagua more attractive to shippers. Among the affected terminals at Santos are Brasil Terminal Portuaria and Ecoporto.
