Ordering a drink “on the rocks” at the bar sounds perfectly normal; however, the combination of a trailing suction hopper dredger and rocks is less common. Even for us. Yet our Shoalway recently experienced what it’s like to work in a rocky area. In the port of Lerwick on the Shetland Islands in Scotland, the vessel dredged over 150,000 cubic meters of sandy material on top of the rocky seabed. This was the first phase of deepening the port area, which plans to accommodate larger passenger, fishing and offshore vessels in the future.
In the second phase, which will be carried out by Boskalis at a later stage, holes will be drilled in the exposed rocky seabed, enabling the use of explosives to blast the rocks into smaller pieces that can be dredged by one of our backhoe dredgers. To protect local marine life, comprehensive measures will be taken throughout the project.
We are proud to make an important contribution to enhancing seaborne trade in the Scottish archipelago with our specialized activities. We thank the project team and the crew of the Shoalway for their hard work on this project.
