Boskalis’ trailing suction hopper dredger Freeway is currently working on a beach and foreshore replenishment project on the Dutch Wadden Island of Ameland. On the western side of this island, the beach has been reinforced with approximately 2.5 million cubic meters of sand, while on the eastern side, work is underway on the foreshore.

This also requires vast amounts of fresh sand from a designated borrow area in the North Sea. However, this area is known for the possible presence of unexploded ordnance (UXO).That’s why Boskalis Hirdes EOD Services was brought in. Our German colleagues mobilized the Kamara, a specialist vessel with extensive experience in locating, identifying and clearing UXOs from the seabed.

By surveying the borrow area for the Freeway, the Kamara supported one of its family members from the Boskalis fleet. A great collaboration that shows what Boskalis is capable of – not only in dredging, but also in the area safety, guided by our NINA philosophy: No Injuries, No Accidents.

A big thank you to the crews of the Kamara and the Freeway, and good luck to both vessels with their future projects!
