Dutch dredging giant Royal Boskalis Westminster and its Belgium based counterpart Jan De Nul have signed a joint venture contract valued at some €250m with the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust in India.
The Phase 2 contract calls for further deepening and widening the approach channel to the port, with the work to be shared equally between the joint venture partners.
Phase 1, completed in 2014, saw deepening and widening allow the port to accommodate container ships of up to 6,000 TEU capacity. The Phase 2 works, scheduled for completion within the next two years, will enable the port extend access up to ships of 12,500 TEU capacity.
The areas to be dredged include what will become a 35.5km long access channel, various turning basins and anchorage areas. More than 40m cubic metres of sand, silt, clay and rock will be removed.
The contractors will deploy a jumbo trailing suction hopper dredger in tandem with a jumbo cutter suction dredger and a large backhoe.
Jawaharlal Nehru Port is the largest container port in India.
