The installation of an offshore wind farm requires many specialist activities. Of course, the installation vessels that install both foundations and turbines stand out the most. But before actual construction can begin at sea, the seabed must be prepared. That is exactly what our trailing suction hopper dredgers Shoreway and Beachway and water injection dredger Terra Plana have been doing at the Yunlin offshore windfarm in Taiwan. And on top of that, two of our subsea rock installation vessels, Seapiper and Seahorse, placed the necessary scour protection around already installed foundations.
The Shoreway and Beachway realized so-called artificial scour pits on the irregular bottom of the South China Sea. These are flat plateaus on which the foundations of offshore wind turbines can later be installed. Our versatile Terra Plana performed a wide variety of tasks in the offshore wind farm to prepare the seabed for the installation of the turbines.
This project is yet another demonstration of the versatility of Boskalis’ extensive fleet of dredging and offshore vessels, which can be utilized for multiple purposes. Because not only are our impressive crane and transport vessels as well as cable-laying vessels deployed to advance the energy transition by transporting and installing foundations and installing power cables for offshore wind farms worldwide, our dredging fleet also plays a crucial role in these large-scale renewable energy projects.
