Boskalis completes installation of first US-built offshore wind substation

Posted on August 3, 2023

Last week, Dutch marine contractor Boskalis completed the installation of what is the first US manufactured offshore wind substation at the South Fork Wind offshore wind farm.

Boskalis, that was awarded the contract to manage transport and installation of the offshore substation and the XXL monopiles for the project last year, used its heavy lift vessel Bokalift 2 to lift and install the topside on the foundation. Boskalis already installed the foundation in June this year. The operation was supported by a fleet of more than a dozen vessels, Boskalis reported.

US-built

This substation was designed and engineered by Kiewit Offshore Services, Ltd. (Kiewit). Kiewit built the 1,500-ton, 60-foot-tall substation at its Ingleside facility near Corpus Christi. The substation will collect the green energy generated by the offshore wind turbines and transfer it to shore via a single, 138kV alternating current (AC) transmission line directly to the East Hampton substation.

South Fork Wind

The 132 MW South Fork Wind project is a 50/50 partnership between Ørsted and Eversource. The wind farm is located 35 miles east of Montauk Point is New York’s first offshore wind farm. It will feature 12 Siemens Gamesa 11 MW wind turbines which will supply power for the equivalent of 70,000 households annually. The first tower sections arrived at the State Pier offshorewind hub in the Port of New London mid July. The remaining towers and blades and nacelles will arrive for installation offshore later this summer and fall.
