A proposal that might interfere with the Army Corps of Engineers’ plans to finally dredge harbors, including Bridgeport’s, was the focus of massive opposition Friday.
Robert Klee, commissioner of the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, defended the Army Corps’ plan as both sensitive to the environment and responsive to the need to dredge long-neglected harbors that contain “fine-grained muck” and not the kind of clean sand that could help combat beach erosion.
“Long Island Sound is our state’s most treasured natural resource and we appreciate the concerns behind this bill,” Klee told the committee. “The measure, however, seeks to address issues with the open water disposal of dredged materials that have already been resolved. Under federal rules, a careful analysis of other potential uses must be conducted before dredged materials can be considered for open water disposal.”
