LONG BEACH ISLAND, NJ — A beach replenishment project is in store for parts of Long Beach Island this fall and winter, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Philadelphia District.
A $54.4 million contract was awarded to Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company of Oak Brook, Ill. to complete periodic nourishment of the Barnegat Inlet to Little Egg Inlet, (Long Beach Island), Coastal Storm Risk Management project, the Army Corps said in a release.
The project is a joint effort of the Army Corps’ Philadelphia District, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, and the municipalities on Long Beach Island. Work is designed to maintain the dune and berm system in the communities and reduce the risk of storm damages to coastal infrastructure.
The contract calls for dredging more than 1.75 million cubic yards of sand from the approved offshore sand borrow area. The sand will be pumped onto the beach at a number of the most eroded portions of the project within Harvey Cedars, Beach Haven and Long Beach Township. The sand is then graded into an engineered dune and berm template, which is designed to reduce damages from coastal storm events.
The contract also includes options for the placement of additional sand in other areas. Dune crossovers/access paths, fencing, dune grass planting, and other features will be installed/repaired as part of the contract, the Army Corps said.
Work is expected to begin in the fall or winter, and will last about 180 days, according to the Army Corps.
