Beach Renourishment Underway Along Several Crystal Coast Beaches

Posted on March 14, 2019

CARTERET COUNTY, NC (WITN) A massive project is underway to help improve beaches along the crystal coast, a project that became critical in the wake of Hurricane Florence.

The $21 million beach re-nourishment project has been in the works for quite some time but the it got shifted a little after Hurricane Florence wiped out some of the dunes along the shore.

A dredging company has been brought in to add new sand to the beaches along a just over 5 mile stretch from the Pine Knoll Shores/ Indian Beach town line to the eastern regional access in Emerald Isle.

Experts with the Shore Protection Office who monitor the beaches say this project is coming at a great time.

The dredging is taking place about 15 miles off shore and the project got underway on Friday.

Officials say they have until April 30th to complete all of the work.
