Beach renourishment projects delayed due to surge in demand for dredges

Posted on January 12, 2026

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Several beach renourishment projects in the Cape Fear region are being delayed due to just one item, dredges, being in high demand.

The project at Carolina Beach is paused because the dredge used to collect and bring sand from offshore is being moved to another project up near Philadelphia.

The Army Corps of Engineers states that this pause was always planned, and the project is expected to resume around mid-February once another dredge is brought in.

Dave Connolly with the Army Corps of Engineers attributes the surge in demand for dredges to three reasons:
  • larger ships requiring the deepening of more and more ports.
  • Many similar projects are underway or being planned to improve or repair the coastline throughout the US.
  • Those projects must be completed within specific environmental windows to minimize damage to the area.

Connolly added that only a handful of companies operate dredges.
