Beach Renourishment Project To Start Soon On Pleasure Island

Posted on January 22, 2019

The renourishment project on Pleasure Island will be getting underway soon.

According to a Facebook post by Councilman Steve Shuttleworth, a pre-construction meeting was held Wednesday at the US Army Corps of Engineer’s office for the Coastal Storm Damage Reduction project.

Weeks Marine is the contracting company that will perform the work for both Carolina Beach and Kure Beach.

The town says some equipment will be on the north end of the island around the 28. Crews will be delivering the pipe sections which are stockpiled on the northern end of Freeman Park.

“The cutter head dredge plant is stationed in the inlet area right up close to the shore. That dredge plant is cutting and pumping sand out of the deep hole right off the tip of Freeman Park,” Shuttleworth said. “They pump sand through the pipes and place it on the beach to be graded by bulldozers. The pipes sections will be extended down the beach as it is extended, they will cover a small section every so many yards to allow pedestrian crossing. As the sand is placed on the beach the contractor will be cordon off the active area. Access to that section of the beach will be restricted until they pass further on. The will reopen the area as the pass far enough down the beach.”

The pipe will remain in place until all the sand is placed. The project is designed to run down to about The Atlantic towers.

They have until April 30 to complete the project.
