A beach renourishment project along the Grand Strand is scheduled to begin in late fall 2025.
The project will take place after peak hurricane season, allowing officials to stay on schedule.
Beach nourishment will begin in North Myrtle Beach in December, and Myrtle Beach begins in February 2026. The last stretch will include Garden City and Surfside Beach, scheduled for April 2026.
The Charleston District awarded the Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company with a contract to place two million cubic yards of material on Myrtle Beach in December 2024.
This would equal 200,000 dump trucks along 26 miles of coastline, according to the release. The renourishment will cost $72 million and is fully funded by the Corps of Engineers.
The project aims to reduce the risk to life and infrastructure behind the dunes along the Grand Strand.
After Hurricane Ian hit Myrtle Beach and the South Carolina Coast in 2022, the beaches experienced severe erosion.
An updated online tracker will provide exact locations where the beach is being impacted by the project.
