The Okaloosa County Commission on Tuesday is expected to consider whether to approve an interlocal agreement with the city of Destin for the planned Holiday Isle beach restoration project.
The agreement calls for the county to provide an estimated $2 million in bed-tax money to pay for the project, which would place about 100,000 to 130,000 cubic yards of East Pass sand on the severely-eroded section of beach that extends from the east jetty to about 4,000 feet to the east.
Destin’s maintenance dredge permit would be used for the project, which would use a dredge that is already in East Pass for the Norriego Point stabilization project.
Destin officials are responsible for the contract with Dyersburg, Tennessee-based Inland Dredging Co., which would dredge sand for the Holiday Isle beach. Inland Dredging is a subcontractor for Norriego Point stabilization project contractor Luhr Bros. of Columbia, Illinois.
Destin officials also are responsible for the contract with Jacksonville-based Taylor Engineering, which would provide construction management for the beach project.
Inland Dredging would be able to start the beach improvements immediately following the completion of the Norriego Point work, which is set to be completed in early spring, county Tourist Development Department Director Jennifer Adams wrote in an agenda request to the commission.
She said the beach project would take three to four weeks and is anticipated to be finished in April.
County and Destin officials call the project a “win-win.”
Besides restoring the beach, the project “would result in the dredging of the Federal Navigation Channel in East Pass, which is necessary to allow safe passage of vessels,” Adams said.
