Fort Island Gulf Beach’s closure due to the COVID-19 public health emergency has provided Citrus County Parks and Recreation an opportunity to move up a project that had been planned for later this spring.
The $300,000 beach sand nourishment project commenced April 6 and is funded through capital improvement funds. Earth Tech Enterprises Inc. was awarded the bid to furnish and deliver approximately 6,200 tons of sand to Fort Island Gulf Beach. The approved sand is being hauled from Davenport Sand Mine of Davenport.
This project and its fast tracked timeline is a collaborative effort of public works and community services department staff working together to complete this project during the current beach closure.
Permits have been obtained from both Department of Environmental Protection and the US Army Corp of Engineers. Turbidity monitoring is being conducted by Professional Services Industries, Inc. (PSI).
Fort Island Gulf Beach is at 16000 W. Fort Island Trail, Crystal River.
