A documentary about flooding on the Somerset Levels has reignited old debates about the effectiveness of dredging to reduce flooding.
An episode of the BBC programme Countryfile series aired on Sunday featured presenter Tom Heap looking at how dredging could impact on water management, for good and bad.
Somerset Rivers Authority chairman John Osman defended the decision to dredge the rivers, which has so far cost £6m of public money.
He said: “The flooding flooded 160 homes. If we had done this work before, the evidence shows that 130 of those homes wouldn’t have flooded.
