A Bam Nuttall and Mott MacDonald (BMMJV) joint venture is to start work on the £14M Dawlish beach management scheme in Devon this month.
Last winter’s storms significantly damaged the groynes, which had to have emergency repairs last summer. The overall aim of the scheme is to reduce flood risk.
Work starts on site this month. It involves removing existing gabion stone in two phases and installing new timber groynes.
In May work starts on the defences at the “neck”, followed by dredging material from Pole Sands, which will be pumped onshore. The final stretch of work from mid-July to end of August will complete remaining beach replenishment work.
“We are phasing works so that construction on the most heavily used sections of beach at the western end of the Warren are complete before the 2017 summer school holidays. Access to at least some part of the beach will be maintained at all times,” said Environment Agency project manager Richard Cox.
The clients are the Environment Agency and Teignbridge District Council and the aim is to complete the project by September.
