Federal Environment Minister Greg Hunt has given a go ahead to the expansion of the Abbot Point coal terminal in north Queensland near the Great Barrier Reef after the Department of Environment approved the move on Monday with a number of strict conditions.
The work still requires approval from the Queensland state government, which is awaiting assurances that a giant coal mine owned by Indian conglomerate Adani Enterprises will proceed to the construction phase.
