PHILADELPHIA — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Philadelphia District shared an update regarding ongoing repairs at the Indian River Inlet bulkhead and south jetty in Sussex County, Delaware.
Last year, USACE awarded a contract to Agate Construction Co., Inc. of Egg Harbor Township, N.J. to repair a portion of failed bulkhead and to sand-tighten a portion of the south jetty at Indian River Inlet in Sussex County, DE.
Sand tightening work on the south jetty is expected to begin in October 2024. The contractor will sand tighten a 215-foot section of the jetty which involves driving steel sheet piling behind the existing sidewalk. Agate Construction Company will be installing fencing starting the week of October 7th and roughly 10 parking spaces will be blocked off to allow deliveries.
On the north side of the inlet, the contractor has been conducting repairs to the bulkhead since the Spring of 2024. Thus far, they have installed a steel sheet pile wall, placed 12,000 tons of rock to fill in a deep scour hole that contributes to the bulkhead failure, and have begun work on a post and panel wall.
The contractor, Agate Construction Company, anticipates completing all construction by Spring 2025.
