Army Corps of Engineers experts came to town last week to formally start the East San Pedro Bay Ecosystem Restoration Feasibility Study and heard Long Beach residents say they wanted everything from sinking the breakwater 30 feet below the ocean surface to enhancing the habitat already existing along that breakwater.
The gathering last Thursday, April 7, was characterized as a scoping meeting, and the Army Corps officials went through the basics of the study twice — duplicating the afternoon meeting with one in the evening for those who had to work. Mayor Robert Garcia opened the afternoon session, speaking to a standing room-only crowd at the Bixby Park Community Center.
