The project is expected to start at the entrance of the Amelia River and continue south.
Maintenance dredging is planned at Fernandina Harbor off Amelia Island, according to a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Jacksonville District news release.
Under the requirements of the National Environmental Policy Act, the Corps is seeking public review and comment to compile a document for the project.
Work is planned where the Florida and Georgia state lines meet near Fernandina Beach in the vicinity of the Intracoastal Waterway and the north of the Amelia River near the Port of Fernandina, according to the release.
The project is to start at the entrance of the Amelia River and continue south past port facilities and reaches up to the split of the Amelia River south of Little Tiger Island.
Periodically removing accumulated sediments from the entrance channel, inner channel, and turning basin gives commercial vessels and recreational boats access to the Port of Fernandina.
The channel depths for the project range from 46 feet at the ocean to 28 feet.
Just south of this project, the Corps has planned work to dredge and conduct channel realignments of the ICW and is also gathering information to fulfill National Environmental Policy Act requirements.
That analysis is set to evaluate maintenance dredging of Reach 1, which stretches from Mile 3.74 to Mile 13.99 of the ICW, spanning from an area of water near RYAM and LignoTech Florida facilities in Fernandina Beach to a point close to Black Hammock Island.
