MYRTLE BEACH, SC – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began offshore equipment mobilization this weekend, marking the start of a $72 million Grand Strand beach renourishment project.
The beach renourishment comes after damage from hurricanes Ian and Debby along the Grand Strand coastline.
The Army Corps of Engineers plans to restore 2 million cubic yards of sand along the coastline and help repair dunes during the project.
North Myrtle Beach officials said this project differs from the city’s regular maintenance schedule.
“We’re calling this an emergency renourishment. I think a lot of people think that this is just our 10-year recap and we continue to do it every ten years, but this is actually a little bit earlier,” said North Myrtle Beach City Multimedia Coordinator Gianna Forbis.
