Former Downing Street chief of staff Lord Gavin Barwell has joined Arcadis as a non-executive adviser.

A statement from the consultant confirmed the former housing minister has been hired to provide strategic advice on construction, housing, placemaking and urban regeneration. It added that he will help Arcadis focus on its emerging work in the residential sector and its housing JV model.

Lord Barwell was MP for Croydon Central from 2010-2017 before losing his seat in that year’s general election. He was then appointed Theresa May’s chief of staff and later appointed to the House of Lords.

Since leaving Downing Street he has notified the parliamentary body, which assesses business appointments, for its assessment on him becoming a non-executive director of the Clarion Housing Group, taking on work with PwC and setting up his own consultancy.

Arcadis UK and Ireland CEO Mark Cowlard said: “This is an incredibly challenging time for everyone regardless of industry, sector or geographical location. Arcadis is ready to play our part wherever we can in the immediate response and the recovery that follows, and Gavin’s appointment will help us do just that.”
