As many areas in the north of England and Scotland struggle to return to normal life after months of flooding, residents live in fear of yet another heavy bout of rainfall which environment experts say could be avoided by simply dredging rivers.
But because of the EU’s European Water Framework Directive, rivers and streams are becoming blocked by rubbish as it “calls on countries to allow rivers to remain as close as possible to natural conditions”.
And despite the UK contributing £55 million a day towards the EU, no money is yet heading towards Yorkshire, where some of the most severe flooding was.
