The Andy Bowie Park Beach Renourishment Project began on Tuesday, November 5, 2024. This project is in partnership with the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), the Texas General Land Office, and the City of South Padre Island.

Currently, the City of South Padre Island is completing their renourishment project where approximately 235,500 cubic yards of beach quality sand is being placed inside city limits. Cameron County is estimated to receive approximately 78,500 cubic yards of beach quality sand to be placed at Andy Bowie Park between the Hilton Garden Inn and CameronCounty Beach Access No.3, adding to the restoration, renourishment, and beatification of our pristine beach and its access areas in South Padre Island, Texas.

“We are thrilled to announce this exciting project and extend our gratitude to the federal and state agencies involved, aswell as the City of South Padre Island. This partnership will provide long-term benefits to our coastal beaches, protect ourdune systems and support local wildlife and endangered species. Additionally, it will enhance habitat and park infrastructure. This project aims to restore erosion caused by recent storms and help mitigate future impacts,” stated Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño, Jr.

“I want to thank the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Texas General Land Office, and the City of South Padre Island for their partnership on this great project. This initiative will create a wider and healthier beach for our residents and visitors to enjoy while also protecting the beach at Andy Bowie Park from coastal erosion,” stated Cameron County Commissioner Pct. 1 Sofia C. Benavides.

“Beach renourishment projects are crucial for our area. This effort will help maintain the resilience of our beaches and infrastructure after storms and severe weather. It will ensure that our beautiful beaches remain safe and enjoyable,” stated Cameron County Parks & Recreation Director Joe E. Vega.

Weather permitting, this project is expected to be completed within two weeks from the commenced time. The beach atAndy Bowie Park will remain open to the public, and we ask everyone to abide by all park safety signage. The company performing the dredging is Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company, LLC.
