MOBILE, Ala. (NBC 15) — Mobile Baykeeper has expressed concerns about the Army Corps of Engineers’ plan to “dump 90 million cubic yards of mud into the Bay” over the next 20 years as part of ongoing dredging to maintain a 50-foot channel.
While the group supports economic growth, it worries about the environmental impact of the dredge material.
Sen. Katie Britt addressed these concerns, stating, “It is my belief that you can do both things. We can sustain the incredible growth and opportunity that we’ve created through deepening and widening the court and at the same time, make sure that we are preserving our natural resources.” Britt emphasized the importance of “beneficial use” and working with the Corps to ensure responsible actions.
