MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — An Alabama state representative and state senator are set to announce legislation that would end dredge disposal, also known as “mud dumping,” in Mobile Bay.
The legislation is being filed by Rep. Rhett Marques (R-AL) and Sen. Chris Elliott (R-AL).
According to a news release from Elliot, the legislation would require the Corps of Engineers to use at least 70 percent of dredged material for beneficial use.
Some uses for dredged material include creating marshes, protecting shorelines, using it for industrial and commercial applications, and restoring eroding coastal habitats.
The law would also make the Corps responsible for maintaining the ship canal, according to the release.
