Duxbury Beach will have a different look starting this season.
Thousands of tons of sand are being trucked onto the six-mile barrier beach to help fight erosion caused by storms.
Scientists believe climate change may be causing more powerful and destructive storms than ever before.
Along with adding sand, the work to rebuild and protect Duxbury Beach includes planting beach grass and shrubs on the dunes and rebuilding the Marshfield/Duxbury sea wall.
Regulars who love everything about Duxbury Beach are following the renovation work closely. “I never forgot this place the first time I saw it,” one local said. “I just wanted to be here all the time.”
Another resident said Duxbury Beach is “extremely important. It’s the lifeblood of this community.”
Officials say even though much of the new sand will wash away, it’s still necessary to help preserve the beach and prevent it from shrinking.
