  • $6.2M Investment To Support Local Boaters And Economy

Boating is a significant issue in the Garden State, and maintaining our boating waterways’ safety and up-to-date infrastructure is a crucial part of our state’s infrastructure. A new project aims to improve navigation and safety at the Jersey Shore.

What is dredging?

Dredging is when machines scoop or suck up sand, mud, or other material from the bottom of a river, lake, or ocean. It’s usually done to make the water deeper so boats can pass through, to clean out built-up dirt, or to move sand for projects like beach restoration.

Why Do Some Oppose Dredging Projects?

Some people oppose dredging because it can harm the environment. It may stir up pollution, damage habitats for fish and wildlife, or change how water naturally flows. Others worry about the noise, cost, and long-term effects that might outweigh the short-term benefits.

According to a recent Patch article, a local dredging project will begin in Southern Ocean County this month. “The Waretown Channel Complex project will complete dredging in Barnegat Light, Barnegat, Long Beach Township, Waretown, and Lacey.”

The dredging project is set to begin soon, this month, and officials say this will be finished by December. “All material removed from the channels will be transported via pipeline and discharged into the Oyster Creek Confined Disposal Facility.”

Let us know what you think of this project. Are you for or against dredging at the Jersey Shore?
